C-SPAN bus stops in Mahoning Valley during tour of the country

Bold letters on the side of C-SPAN’s bus declare that the television network is “where history unfolds daily.”

On Tuesday, Mahoning Valley students learned about some of that history when the bus paid a visit to Poland Seminary High School and Boardman High School.

Students toured the C-SPAN bus, which is in the midst of a trip to 50 state capitals to mark the network’s 25th anniversary. In addition to the videos and interactive activities provided by C-SPAN, students also heard from speakers who talked to them about local government and civic engagement.

“The idea behind the C-SPAN bus is to showcase resources for students,” said Doug Hemmig, C-SPAN community relations representative.

The bus contains more than 2,000 hours of content, which students were able to explore Tuesday.

“The main thing is to create that awareness, so they can learn what’s going on in Washington,” Hemmig said.

The visit was made possible by help from Armstrong. C-SPAN partners with local cable providers to plan such events, and Armstrong suggested the Mahoning Valley as a good place to visit.

Poland native with story similar to new movie ‘Wonder’ visits students

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – “Wonder,” a new movie coming out about a young child with facial differences, has prompted a local man with a similar case to come back home and share his experience.

Freddy Seitz, now 25 years old, attended Poland Middle School with his siblings. They spent the day on Tuesday telling current students, parents, and faculty their story.

“A few years ago, I was in this school. I was sitting where you’re sitting,” Seitz said.

He was born ten weeks early with Goldenhar Syndrome — a craniofacial difference that, among other things, left him without his right ear, cheek, or jawbone.

By the time Seitz was 3, he was completely deaf and at 5, he’d had more than 19 surgeries to repair parts of his face and help him breathe. He uses sign language to communicate.

PSHS / Eastgate Yellow Creek Watershed Collaboration

In response to concerns about Yellow Creek’s water quality, the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments applied to and received funding from the Ohio EPA’s Environmental Education Fund program to establish educational signs for Yellow Creek Watershed residents to understand the nature of stormwater, how it affects our local streams and drinking water sources, and how they can protect our local surface waters.  As part of the grant, an education and outreach component was created with collaboration from the Poland Local School District.  Eastgate reached out to the students in PSHS’s Multimedia Production 2 classes to create the education and outreach materials for distribution at key areas around Yellow Creek, including schools in our district. The flyer will be used to discuss in further details about the Yellow Creek Watershed, stormwater, and measure landowners can take to prevent pollutants from entering nearby streams.   All students in these classes took part in creating their own unique flyer, which were submitted to and selected by Eastgate’s Environmental staff the Mill Creek MetroParks .   The flyer selected represented the overall theme for the project and was created by Olivia Morgan.
