Building Awards2010-2011 WFMJ/Giant Eagel Class Act Award for Cheryl Saculla Mary Hernon received a $2400 grant from teh Federation of American Consumers and Travelers. She purchased the Fountas and Pinnell leveled Literacy intervention. 2009-2010 Designated Excellent with Distinction by ODE for the 2 nd year in a row- The Ohio Department of Education released district and building ratings based on the 2008-2009 State Report Cards. Poland North Elementary School received the ODE's highest rating: "Excellent with Distinction" .....for the 2nd year in a row! According to a Vindicator's article, there are 67 schools in Mahoning County that were rated. Of those 67, only 2 were designated Excellent with Distinction. Congratulations to our students, staff, PTO and parents for their commitment to the students of our school! Declared the 2010 “Students for Wish Kids” winner by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This means our school raised more money than any other school in the Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Region. Recipient of Buckeye Best Award-Silver for outstanding physical education, nutrition and tobacco education programs Recipient of $2,000 Nutrition Grant from the Ohio Department of Education 1 st Place Winner of Radio Disney's Move It School Challenge ( 1 of 20 schools in the state) 3 rd Place Winner in Green Team's county-wide “Cash for Cans Contest” PTO honored as a “Hero of the Mahoning Valley” by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross Recipient of $2,000.00 grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley Declared a WILD School Site by the Ohio Division of Wildlife for having an outstanding outdoor education program Recipient of $500.00 grant from the Ohio Division of Wildlife Recipient of $1,500.00 grant from Kohl's for hosting a Earth Day activity Recipient of 2010 Core Essentials Award- 1 of only 8 school in the country to earn this award for outstanding character education (2 time winner- 2007, 2010) State Runner-Up in Disney's Planet Challenge- All 4th Grade students worked to increase the environmental awareness of others within the community. The following teachers received mini-grants from the Poland Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence: Mrs. Resch 2008Excellent with Distinction! - Poland North Elementary is 1 of only 3 schools in Mahoning County to be designated "Excellent with Distinction" by the Ohio Department of Education. There are 69 schools in Mahoning County and approximately 168 in the tri-county area. Only 6 were designated "Excellent with Distinction" which is the State's highest mark. It recognizes schools that are "making significant progress even though they are already among the top tier of schools." 2008 Buckeye Best Healthy School Silver Award - Our school has been recognized for the hard work and dedication all have shown to improving the health and wellness of students and staff. First Place Per-Capita Winner in the 2007-2008 "Cash for Cans" Contest North collected 1,648 pounds of aluminum and will receive a check in the amount of $1,1145.82. Great job! Keep those cans coming! Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District Policy Committee - $900 Mini-Grant Cash for Cans $5000 Award! - Poland North Elementary School was recognized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors for its participation in the fourth annual "Cans for Cash - City Recycling Challenge," a national contest that rewards cities for recycling used aluminum beverage cans. The building was one of only four participants in the country to win $5,000.00 for having the most innovative ways of promoting recycling and the contest.
