Any article of clothing, jewelry or other materials seen as being distracting to school learning or perceived as gang related are prohibited.
Future new fads cannot be spelled out in the personal appearance guidelines, but as a general rule, any type of extreme dress or hairstyle that attracts undue attention is unacceptable.
Personal Property
All personal property should be marked with the student's name. Children are discouraged from wearing expensive items.
Students are prohibited from bringing toys, games, electronics, playground balls, etc., unless the classroom teacher instructs them to do so. If an item is not brought to school it cannot be misplaced or stolen. The items mentioned will be taken from the student and retuned to the student's parents.
Electronic Devices
Students are not permitted to use privately owned communication devices (i.e. beepers, pagers, cellular phones) at any time during the school day or while on school buses. The use of privately owned devices are strictly forbidden at all times in school locker rooms, school restrooms, and other areas within the school where privacy can be expected.
Code of Conduct
The Poland Board of Education has adopted a Code of Conduct that governs students attending the Poland Schools. A full copy is available upon request. The Code of Conduct is posted conspicuously at various locations in the building. Simply stated, any conduct that causes a disruption with any school function or activity or interferes with the health, safety or rights of others is prohibited.
Discipline
One of our main objectives at North Elementary is to build self discipline and to emphasize the importance of citizenship and good manners. In order to reinforce this and to keep you aware of problems and secure your support, we have “Note Home” slip which will be sent when we believe you need to review some areas of discipline with your child to remind them of proper behavior.
Your child has been advised of disciplinary procedure in the student handbook.
Each teacher will advise you regarding his/her classroom discipline rules.
Bullying
A student shall not engage in any act which frightens, degrades, harasses, bullies, or disgraces any student or member of the certified or classified staff, or visitor by written, verbal, physical or gestural means.
Prohibition against Sexual Harassment
The following policy applies to all Poland students:
Students who engage in sexual harassment on school premises or off school premises at a school-sponsored activity will be subject to appropriate discipline, which may include suspension or expulsion. Sexual harassment is any activity of a sexual nature that is unwanted or unwelcome, including but not limited to, unwanted touching, pinching, patting, verbal comments of a sexual nature, sexual name-calling, pressure to engage in sexual activity, repeated propositions, and unwanted body contact.
Playground
Playground rules are posted and available for your review. All teachers have gone over these with the children and they are reinforced by the Monitor and Playground Volunteers.
We have a policy of outside recess unless the weather is 20 degrees or its equivalent considering wind chill factor. Determining wind chill has been difficult but we believe we now have this under control. Often we will take the children out for just a short time if it is a sunny cold day. They really need an opportunity to get out and run and yell and release some energy.
We ask you to please see that your child is dressed appropriately for this kind of outdoor recess, heavy coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc. Boots are important if there is any snow. If your child does not have boots but has outdoor shoes please drop the teacher a note telling her your child can go out in the snow. It is your child‘s responsibility to have these things on before going out to play or dismissal from school.
Often the older children do not wear snow boots, they wear tennis shoes, etc and their feet get wet when they play in the snow. If this occurs, your child will have to call you for dry socks or sit in wet ones. This, of course, is not a good situation so we ask that you see they are prepared for the weather. Please let us know if you ever have a problem providing one of these winter items - we may be able to help.
With regard to spring and fall recess. Please remember that sturdy shoes and socks are important for safety and because the weather changes, please check weather channels to be sure children have sweaters or jackets if needed.
Birthdays
Celebrating birthdays is permitted during school hours. A treat can be brought in for the entire class. Click here for a list of treat guidelines. The basic rule followed is that birthday celebrations should take a minimum amount of instructional time.
The teacher will decide when the treat will be distributed. Also, the teacher will decide how much class time to take for the celebration.
Please do not have items such as balloons or flowers sent to the school. We will not deliver them to the student.
Invitations to parties outside of the school should not be distributed at school unless everyone in the class is invited. We do not give out phone numbers or addresses.
