First Nine Weeks

09/04/12 Welcome back!  Students participated in activities to help them begin to develop a sense of community in our classroom.  I am looking forward to working with my new students and their families to make this a great year!  I welcome all questions and concerns so that my students feel ready to learn when they come to class!   Click here to see the letter about "Flipping the Classroom."
09/05/12 Students received their textbooks.  Books need to be covered by Friday, September 7.  Students were encouraged to bring in a picture of themselves to be displayed on our:  "Where have you been?" bulletin board.  We will be using the pictures to collect data for our unit on data.  Students completed a time capsule activity.  This activity has two purposes.  The first is to help me get to know my students a little better.  The second is to provide students with the opportunity to see how their opinions change and grow over the school year.  Finally, students received locker passes.  These are to be used if students forget something in their locker during the first nine weeks.  If they do not need to use the passes, they can be turned in for 1 extra credit point each.
09/06/12 Students received an information sheet that that will help them be successful in math class.  Students placed this sheet in their math binders.  To view a copy, click this link.  Students took a formative math assessment.  This helps to show where students are in their math journey.  This assessment was not for a grade but for planning purposes only.
09/07/12 We went over the formative assessment that students took yesterday.  See the assessment by clicking this link.  The last page of notes found on the link gives students' CTP* (*chance to practice or homework).  Students had time to work on 8 multiplying fractions problems in class.  If they did not finish the problems, they should be completed for Monday.  Students received their first homework grade today for having their books covered.  Most students had this accomplished.  Great job! If your student did not cover his/her book, please help them accomplish that for Monday.  Have a great weekend!  Go Bulldogs!
09/10/12 Students began to learn the daily procedures for class.  Students come in and work on "Entrance Ticket" problems while I check to see if their homework is complete.  We go over the Entrance Ticket problems and then the homework.  Next we begin our lesson for the day.  Our first unit is a review unit.  The first chapter is Rev-1 Formulas and Variables.  Click on the link in the previous sentence to see today's notes and CTP (homework) assignment.  Some students have not covered their textbooks.  This must be completed by tomorrow.  If not, students will report to my room during recess to cover their books.

09/17/12 We went over Friday's homework and then began to review for tomorrow's quiz.  Students know that they will need to write the order of operations on tomorrow's quiz.  Also, the following math vocabulary will be on the quiz:  variable, expression, substituting, tables, and formula.  In addition, students received a written review.  Click the word "review" if you need to print another copy of the review.  Reviews are due tomorrow.  Each question is worth 1/4 or .25 points.  Please spend time studying this evening.  I will be available for homework help tomorrow from 8-8:30 am.
09/18/12 Students handed in their reviews and took their first quiz.
09/19/12 Students received their graded reviews and quizzes.  Parents may view their students scores by accessing Parent Progress Book.  Click here to see the overall results of the quiz.  As a rule, I try to return and go over quizzes and tests the next day.  I also show students a circle graph that is a summary of all 93 students (this includes an average score).  That circle graph can be viewed by clicking the link on the word "here".
09/20/12 We completed Rev-4 Inverse Operations.  Click on the link to see the notes and CTP.
09/21/12 Mrs. Marconi was not here.  See her if you were absent to get the worksheet students completed in class.  If students did not complete the work in class, they should finish it for CTP.
09/24/12 We began Rev-5 Translating Words to Expressions.  There is no CTP tonight.  Last Thursday, students received a flyer inviting parents to "Homework Help for Parents".  All students who return this form will receive 3 extra credit points (even if parents are unable to attend).
09/25/12 We began class by going over the worksheet students completed when I was absent.  Next, we finished Rev-5.  Click the link to see the notes and CTP assignment.  Tomorrow we will have an open notes quiz over Rev 4 & 5.  Just a reminder that the invitation for "Homework Help for Parents" is due tomorrow.

10/09/12 Returned and went over the quiz.  Click here to see our results.  We began the next chapter and unit.  This unit is called Numbers, Number Sense, and Operations (NNSO).  Click here for today's notes NNSO-1 The Real Number System.  There is no homework for tonight.  Some students still do not have calculators.  As of tomorrow, all students must bring a calculator every day.  This should have been accomplished the first week of school.
10/10/12 Continued with NNSO-1.  NO CTP tonight.
10/11/12 Continued with NNSO-1.  No CTP tonight.  Have a great weekend!
10/15/12 Finished NNSO-1.  Click the link to see the notes and CTP.  Students saw a pie graph that showed how last year's class did on the NNSO 1-3 quiz.  They now know that in order to do well on the quiz that will be given after we cover NNSO 2 & 3, they will have to learn all the concepts from NNSO 1.  Please ask your son or daughter if they are able to answer "yes" to the "I Can" statements at the beginning of the chapter.  This is very important to their success on the upcoming quiz.
10/16/12 Began NNSO-2 Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers.  Click the link to see the notes and CTP (Only 1st & 8th periods have CTP.  The other 2 classes did not get far enough to be able to do these problems.)  Please encourage you son or daughter to attend morning homework help (8:00-8:30 am).  One of the reasons 2nd and 6th period did not get as far in the lesson is because they had so many questions about last night's homework.
10/17/12 Continued with NNSO-2.  Click the link to see the notes and CTP.
10/18/12 Finished NNSO-2.  Today, students participated in their first PIG Out!  PIG stands for pairs, individuals, or groups.  We worked on application problems from NNSO-2.  Students got to choose to work in pairs, as individuals, or in groups of 4 or less.  Research indicates that students achieve at higher levels when they are given choices in the classroom.  Click this link to see our notes, the PIG out problems, and tonight's CTP.  If students did not finish the PIG our problems in class, they must finish them tonight as well as doing the CTP worksheet.
10/19/12 Went over the PIG Out problems and CTP.  Had a little time to begin NNSO-3 Percents and Proportions.  There is no CTP for the weekend, however, students should spend time going over NNSO 1 & 2 notes.  We will probably have a quiz next Friday.  There is a great deal of material in these 3 chapters so it would be a good idea to review what we have already learned.  Also, students who are struggling should come for homework help next week.
10/22/12 Continued NNSO-3.  Click the link to see our notes and CTP.  Students will have a quiz on Friday.  This will be our last major grade for the nine weeks.  Students should begin to study by redoing CTP problems and problems from the notes.  Also, students should come in for homework help from 8:00-8:30 am to get extra help.
10/23/12 Finished NNSO-3.  Click the link to see our notes and the Ohio Achievement Problems (CTP).  We will begin to review tomorrow.  The quiz is Friday.  If your son/daughter is struggling, please have them come for homework help tomorrow from 8:00-8:30.  In order to do well on this quiz, students will have to spend a fair amount of time studying.
10/24/12 Went over OAA problems.  Handed out the review for the quiz.  Students had time to work on the review in class.  Click the links to see the OAA problems and the review.  Students should complete the review this evening.  Tomorrow we will spend the first 20 minutes in a PIG out where students will work in groups to check their answers.  We will spend the second 20 minutes going over the answers as a class and doing an oral review.  We will have an after-school study session tomorrow from 3:30-4:30 pm.  This is for the benefit of students who cannot get to homework help in the morning.  All students are welcome.  Students should be spending time studying for Friday's quiz.
10/25/12 Students participated in a PIG out if they completed their reviews.  Students who did not finish, spent the class period completing the review.  I noticed that several students who had been absent during our lessons did not get the notes they missed.  It is VERY important for students who are absent to get the class notes and complete the homework.  Students should be studying tonight for tomorrow's quiz.
10/26/12 Students handed in the review and took the quiz.  Have a great weekend!
10/29/12 Returned and went over the quiz.  Click here to see our results.  Next, students completed a self-evaluation form to help them see which concepts they have mastered and which they still need to work on.  Studies show that students who self-evaluate their own performance tend to achieve at higher levels.  Students are to bring the forms home to parents for discussion and signature.  The signed forms are due tomorrow (worth 5 points).  Click here to see the self-evaluation form
10/30/12 Collected students first nine-week locker passes (1 extra credit point each).  Collected self-evaluation forms (5 points).  We began NNSO-4 Absolute Value.  Click the link to see our notes and CTP.
10/31/12 Went over NNSO-4 CTP.  Today we began investigating the concept of combining integers.  We looked at several problems and the students came up with a rule for how to combine integers.  There were no official notes today.  If you were absent, please see Mrs. Marconi for Homework Help when you return.  There is in CTP for tonight.  Happy Halloween!  Be Safe!
11/01/12 Continued to explore combining integers.  Click here to see our very informal notes.  Students received a worksheet for CTP.  If you were absent, see Mrs. Marconi for a worksheet when you return to school.
11/02/12 Mrs. Marconi was not here so students completed a NNSO review worksheet.  See Mrs. Marconi when you return to get a copy.  This is the end of the first nine weeks.
