Return to the Classroom and Selecting Learning Option for Third Grading Period

Hello, Bulldog families; This is Dr. Holland, Interim Superintendent of Poland Schools.

We want to provide an update on the District’s status in relation to the effects of COVID and our preparation for the return to in-person learning.

While we recognize the importance of having children back in school, we want to ensure that Poland Schools provide a safe, positive and consistent educational program with high quality instruction.

The District administration and teachers have worked together to modify our educational program and we continue our preparation by adding necessary technology and teacher training.  Additionally, we are increasing our teacher and support staff substitute ranks to support our classrooms and student transportation.  These steps are taken in order to keep our schools consistently open and in-person under this new plan for the rest of the school year.

The plan was to provide 100% remote learning until January 19th to allow us time to make the necessary changes and preparations for the new learning format, and to monitor the effect of COVID spread following the Holidays.  I have been in direct contact with the Ohio Department of Health and the Mahoning County Health Department concerning the recent changes in quarantining protocols, outlined by Governor DeWine, reports on COVID spread, and to begin planning for District staff vaccinations.

Unfortunately, during this past weekend we witnessed an increase in the number of ill employees testing positive.  The health department figures for our zip code, reported as of December 31st, reveal an increase in the number of COVID cases and thus it appears that we could experience this increase continuing through the weekend.  This data reinforces our decision to maintain remote instruction through January 19th.

When we return to in-person learning January 19th, we will still maintain all safety protocols, mandatory facial coverings, hand washing, hand sanitizing, including appropriate social distancing.  We will utilize the new quarantine protocols for classroom contact based on guidance from the Ohio Health Department.

Prevention strategies should be layered on one another and used at the same time. No single strategy is sufficient. Social distancing of 6 feet should be maintained whenever possible, however, when combined with other control measures (masks, handwashing, increased cleaning, etc.) a distance of less than 6 feet may be acceptable in a classroom setting. Any signs of a cluster of new cases in a school or the local community should result in a re-evaluation of mitigation strategies.

Third Quarter Learning Modality Selection

The third grading period begins Tuesday, January 19th and our modality enrollment deadline is midnight Monday, January 11th.

All parents will need to select and enroll your child’s learning modality preference for the third grading period.  As a reminder, once a student enrolls in the remote option, they must remain remote through the rest of the grading period.  As always, students will be permitted to move from in-person to remote instruction at any time.  Click on the following link to access the Modality Enrollment Form.  A gmail account is required to complete the survey.

It is our goal to maintain this instructional plan and schedule for the rest of the school year.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we make these preparations.

Thank you.
