Transportation Update - 01/09/2022

Transportation Changes

Attention Bulldog Families:

Since the start of the school year, we have communicated every update we could regarding the nationwide bus driver shortage and its effects on our district. We have had to make unprecedented changes to our transportation because of the shortage and wholly appreciate the dedication of our current bus drivers.

Due to emergency circumstances, the following bus routes have been temporarily eliminated until further notice:

  • Bus #33
  • Bus #35

The change will last a minimum of one week. Those affected by this change have been notified and will be notified again in the next 24 hours.

Please check your email to stay up to date with ongoing transportation changes. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your continued understanding.

Thank you.

UPDATE: A call was sent to affected families on January 7, 2022, at 5 pm:

Hello. This is Craig Hockenberry, Superintendent of Poland Local Schools. First of all, please accept my apologies for all of the families that were impacted by the emergency reduction of school bus routes in Poland and Holy Family schools. As many of you know, we have been struggling all year to address the bus driver shortage.

On Thursday, January 6 at 1 pm, we were notified of a driver who is now unable to return until further notice. At this point, we have officially reached our threshold, and we are now unable to carry out the current level of transportation. After exhausting all options, including adjusting and combining routes, we have been forced to temporarily eliminate Bus Routes #33 and #35

When we found this out, we sent two calls out on January 6 at 6 pm and then another at 8:15 pm. We also placed an alert on social media, and we placed and posted on our school website. We will continue to communicate with everybody throughout the weekend, including tonight.

Please understand that *our district is down a total of seven drivers* as of January 2022. We hope that in the coming weeks, this changes and we’re able to restore all the routes. In the meantime, we’re working to open our schools in the morning before school and in the afternoon after school for all of our working families. Please stay tuned from your building-level principals for more information.

Again, I am so very sorry for this disruption of transportation. I apologize. I promise to continue to look at every possible option and continue to communicate as much as possible, Thank you all for your understanding.

Mr. Craig D. Hockenberry
Superintendent, Poland Local Schools
